No writing is ever wasted, Peter. You should know that. Besides, don’t you ever delve into your “murdered darlings” file to look for inspiration for new work? I never fully delete any scene – and I have been known to re-work bits from old stories and insert them into new ones. So don’t feel like you’re inefficient – feel instead like you’re investing in future stories by donating whole scenes to them.

Absolutely. There really is something freeing about it, isn’t there? But I also feel your pain. Maybe you should step back from the story for a little while (if time permits you to) and come back after a few weeks. I find that a bit of separation can work wonders in clearing up what can stay and what can go. Good luck!

That’s an interesting parallel. I did a good purge when last moving house, but such times aren’t conducive to writing/editing.

I think what irks me about purging my writing is that it’s an admission that the time spent on writing the discarded section was wasted, and I don’t like to think of myself as inefficient. But the alternative is to believe that I can write perfectly first time around, and I don’t want to think of myself as arrogant either!

I usually enjoy the editing process the most, but the gothic horror short story I’m working on has me at a loss. I just don’t know what should stay and what is not important. So hard! But you are right, in the end, after hacking like crazy, your soul feels free and the words seem to fly! =)

Exactly. How else do you get the effect of calling out someone’s name on a crowded train platform? And small children are definitely excitable – as a mother of some myself I can certainly attest to that. Thanks for the comment!

Precisely. Sure, I can see why sparing use of them is a good thing, but virtually eliminating them entirely is a bit much. The JK Rowling method of six in one paragraph (I kid you not) is a bit much, I grant you, but there is a place for them, I think. Thanks for the support!
